Created in 1930, Ushibori captures a lone boat moving through falling snow beside the waterfront of Ushibori, in present-day Itako, Ibaraki Prefecture.

Set near Lake Kasumigaura, Ushibori had long been a busy “wind-waiting port”, where boats stopped before attempting the difficult crossing of the lake.

Hasui, one of the masters of the shin-hanga movement, was drawn to ordinary landscapes transformed by rain, snow, dusk and moonlight.

Here, the old working port is reduced to snow, dark water and a solitary figure- a beautifully still portrait of winter in rural Japan.
