The Siren (1904) by Louis Loeb
The danger is not shown as a storm or a wreck. It is shown as waiting.
Louis Loeb paints the siren alone on the rocks, turned inward, with the sea dark behind her and the lyre almost slipping into shadow.
In Greek mythology, sirens are known for the song that draws sailors away from safety. Here, the song has not begun, or perhaps it has just ended.
The painting feels intimate and ominous at the same time: a mythological figure caught between beauty and threat, silence and song.
