The Dance of Life by Edvard Munch is not really just about a dance.

At the centre, a couple moves as if they have melted into one body. Her red dress wraps around him, carrying love, passion, and pain in the same colour. On one side stands a woman in white, bright with youth and possibility. On the other, a woman in black stands rigid, already outside the dance.

The longer you look, the more the scene changes. What begins as a summer night by the sea becomes Munch’s whole cycle of desire, innocence, jealousy, loneliness, and death.
