Sunflowers (1888) by Vincent van Gogh

Sunflowers (1888) by Vincent van Gogh

Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh is one of the most recognisable flower paintings in the world, but it began as something personal.

Painted in Arles in 1888, this fourth version of Sunflowers was part of Van Gogh’s plan for the Yellow House, where he hoped to build a shared studio with Paul Gauguin.

Van Gogh saw the sunflower as his own flower. In this painting, it becomes more than a still life: a gesture of welcome, friendship and gratitude.
