Sumo wrestlers (1852) by Utagawa Yoshikazu
A bright roster of 62 sumo wrestlers, each boxed like a collectible card, plus two referees watching from the top corners.
It’s part sports poster, part pop pattern, all energy, the kind of print that makes a wall feel instantly alive.
About the artist (Utagawa Yoshikazu)
Utagawa Yoshikazu was a 19th-century ukiyo-e artist active in late Edo Japan, best known for bold colour, crowd scenes, and prints that feel graphic and modern.
He worked in the Utagawa school tradition and often made images of popular culture of the time, from performers and heroes to everyday spectacle like this.
About Ukiyo-e
Ukiyo-e refers to Japanese woodblock prints that flourished in the Edo period.
Ukiyo-e means “pictures of the floating world,” but the floating world wasn’t fantasy. It was real life, seen softly. The beauty of the mundane, everyday pleasures and passing moments. The point was never permanence. The point was presence.
