Rainy Scene on a Bridge (1800s) by Utagawa Kunisada
A wind-whipped umbrella and a woman caught mid-stride, this ukiyo-e scene freezes the exact second the weather turns.
Take this stormy little moment home.
About Utagawa Kunisada
Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865), also known as Toyokuni III, was the biggest ukiyo-e celebrity of 19th-century Edo: wildly popular, insanely prolific, and basically the era’s best-selling print designer.
He’s especially loved for his kabuki actor portraits and bijin-ga (beautiful women), capturing theatre, fashion, and everyday drama with bold colour and pure graphic impact.
About Ukiyo-e
Ukiyo-e refers to Japanese woodblock prints that flourished in the Edo period.
Ukiyo-e means “pictures of the floating world,” but the floating world wasn’t fantasy. It was real life, seen softly. The beauty of the mundane, everyday pleasures and passing moments. The point was never permanence. The point was presence.
