Kabuki is classical Japanese theatre known for heightened drama, stylised movement, elaborate costume and actors who could turn one pose into a complete emotional moment.

In this 1867 print, Kunichika shows Kawarazaki Gonjūrō as Mizuguruma no Gonji, a stage character caught mid-action with a green cloak, drawn sword and tense, concentrated gaze.

Kunichika was one of the last great ukiyo-e masters of kabuki actor portraits, and he gives this image exactly what it needs: speed, colour and stage pressure.
