Deportista (Rámon Novarro) (1925) by Ángel Zárraga
Deportista (meaning sportsman) was painted by Mexican painter Ángel Zárraga in 1925.
The subject of the painting is Rámon Novarro, a Mexican actor who was one of the first openly gay Hollywood stars in the 1920s. Novarro’s life was marked by both success and tragedy.
He starred in several films, including the 1925 production of “Ben-Hur,” which was a huge commercial success. However, he also faced discrimination and harassment in Hollywood due to his sexuality.
Sadly, Novarro’s life ended in tragedy when he was brutally murdered in his home in 1968. His story is a reminder of the challenges that LGBTQ+ individuals have faced throughout history, and the importance of celebrating their contributions to art and culture.
