Winter Moon at Toyamagahara (1931) by Kawase Hasui
Created in December 1931, this woodblock print shows Toyamagahara under a full winter moon, its bare trees silhouetted against Hasui’s deep blue night sky.
Toyamagahara once stretched across what is now Okubo and Hyakunincho in Tokyo’s Shinjuku ward- an open landscape almost impossible to imagine in the city today.
A leading artist of the shin-hanga movement, Hasui was drawn to rain, snow, moonlight and fleeting changes in atmosphere, repeatedly finding moments of beauty within everyday Japanese landscapes.
