Tiepolo shows the Trojan Horse being dragged through the city gates, surrounded by people who think they are witnessing a victory procession.
In the myth, the idea of the horse is credited to Odysseus. After ten years of war, the Greeks leave it behind as a false offering and pretend to sail away.
The Trojans pull it into the city. That night, the Greek soldiers hidden inside emerge, open the gates, and Troy falls.
What makes the painting so good is the innocence of the moment. No fire yet. No massacre. Just a city applauding its own undoing.
