Spring Evening at Kintai Bridge (1947) by Kawase Hasui
Created in 1947, this woodblock print shows Kintai Bridge in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi, crossing the Nishiki River under spring cherry blossoms.
First built in 1673, the five-arched wooden bridge became one of Japan’s most distinctive landmarks and is now a designated place of scenic beauty.
Hasui, one of the great artists of the shin-hanga movement, returned often to famous landscapes, transforming them through weather, season and light.
Here, the bridge, blossoms and blue evening sky turn a celebrated historic site into something soft, still and almost dreamlike.
