Shakuntala Removing a Thorn from Her Foot (1898) by Raja Ravi Varma

Kilimanoor, Kerala, 1898. Shakuntala has found a reason to stop walking: a thorn in her foot. Her backward glance tells another story.

Drawn from the story of Shakuntala and Dushyanta, this scene catches the newly smitten heroine lingering while her friends recognise the excuse. Ravi Varma turns an epic romance into a moment anyone who has fallen in love might recognise.

Bring this scene of a stolen glance into a living room or reading corner as an Indian art print. Choose a decorative gold, wood or black frame for your home decor, or give Shakuntala as a Diwali gift to someone who loves art and storytelling.

About Raja Ravi Varma:

Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) brought European oil-painting techniques to Indian portraits and stories from the epics. His press, established in 1894, carried these images into homes through affordable colour prints.
