Self-Portrait with Red Background Print | Amrita Sher-Gil

Self-Portrait with Red Background (c.1930) by Amrita Sher-Gil

Paris, around 1930. A red background presses forward around Sher-Gil's dark hair, blue-grey clothing and direct gaze.

During her years at the École des Beaux-Arts, she made self-portraits that tried on different moods and identities. Here, the force of the colour meets the confidence of a young artist making herself the subject.

The red background gives this self-portrait the presence to stand alone above a console or join a colourful gallery wall. A striking choice for home decor, the framed art print also makes a festive gift for someone with a love of bold colour.
