Saga Gorō Mitsutoki (c. 1844–48) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi
The battle is still raging, but Mitsutoki has already crossed into legend.
The Battle of Dan-no-ura was the final battle of the Genpei War- a civil war between two powerful samurai clans, the Taira and the Minamoto, over control of Japan and influence over the imperial throne.
Kuniyoshi shows Saga Gorō Mitsutoki on the deck of a Taira ship, his padded armour struck with arrows as the sea churns behind him. He kneels not in defeat, but in report- carrying the violence of the battlefield back to those waiting on board.
