Pygmalion and Galatea (1890) by Jean-Léon Gérôme

Pygmalion and Galatea (1890) by Jean-Léon Gérôme

Gérôme paints the exact moment when myth becomes real: the sculptor Pygmalion embraces Galatea as she warms into life. The studio is still cluttered with tools and unfinished works, yet magic interrupts the mundane.

The Sculptor Who Fell for His Own Creation

In Greek myth, Pygmalion is a king and sculptor who turns away from the world of living women and pours all his longing into a single figure carved from ivory.

So perfect is her form that he falls in love with the silent statue, praying that the gods will grant life to what should only be art.

Aphrodite, moved by his devotion, breathes warmth into the cold ivory. The statue awakens as Galatea, steps down from her pedestal, and walks into his arms.
