Harper’s August (1896) by Edward Penfield
Relaxed, summery, and a little playful, this August cover feels like a perfectly composed vacation scene.
The bold shapes and softened palette give it a leisurely, almost Riviera-like mood despite its unmistakably vintage roots.
About the artist
Edward Penfield was one of America’s most influential poster artists. At Harper & Brothers, he helped define the look of Harper’s Magazine through a celebrated series of covers and posters beginning in the 1890s. His work is known for its bold composition, graphic simplicity, and quiet wit.
A beautiful piece for homes that like art, books, and a bit of old-world character.
