Futatsu Hall in Nikkō (1929) by Kawase Hasui
Rain falls hard over Futatsudō Hall in Nikkō.
The red temple buildings sit low under the cedar forest, their roofs darkened by the weather. The courtyard has turned slick, reflecting bits of roof, railing and stone. Near the centre, a traveller in a straw rain-cape crosses slowly with his head bent.
Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) travelled through Japan with a sketchbook, chasing moods and places. Rain on a calm street, snow settling over a village, moonlight caught between trees.
His landscapes are studies in weather, light and passing time, turning ordinary corners of Japan into something dreamlike and deeply tender.
