Fumiyomu Onna- Woman Reading a Letter (1793) by Kitagawa Utamaro

Fumiyomu Onna- Woman Reading a Letter (1793) by Kitagawa Utamaro

Fumi yomu onna (Woman Reading a Letter) is a colour woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro as part of his series Ten Classes of Women’s Physiognomy.

Utamaro catches a woman mid-read, in a quiet, private pause. The series is known for using these everyday, in-between moments to suggest different emotions and facets of women, rather than posed “ideal beauty.”

Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1753 to 1806) was one of ukiyo-e’s great masters, best known for bijin-ga: intimate, psychologically sharp portraits of beautiful women in Edo.

He helped push the genre beyond idealised beauty, placing women in ordinary life and capturing fleeting moods with astonishing precision.

Portrait by Eishi, 1815

About Ukiyo-e

Ukiyo-e refers to Japanese woodblock prints that flourished in the Edo period.

Ukiyo-e means “pictures of the floating world,” but the floating world wasn’t fantasy. It was real life, seen softly. The beauty of the mundane, everyday pleasures and passing moments. The point was never permanence. The point was presence.
