Evening of Mount Fuji from Lake Ashino-ko (1935) by Kawase Hasui
Made in the summer of 1935, this colour woodblock shows Mount Fuji rising beyond Lake Ashi at Moto-Hakone in Hakone, Kanagawa.
Lake Ashi was formed around 3,100 years ago when volcanic debris dammed an ancient river; its shores later became part of historic Hakone, a major stop on the old Tōkaidō route.
Beyond the lake stands Mount Fuji, sacred for centuries and one of the most enduring subjects in Japanese art.
Hasui travelled across Japan sketching landscapes, becoming one of the defining artists of the 20th-century shin-hanga movement.
